Studio I

Alright- difference between studio and fundamental classes? studios are 5 hours long, with real life applications, and we have to follow code- EGRESS and ADA- (fire escape and handicap rules). This quarter I took a professor who shares the same ideals as I do when it comes to architecture. <y class was priveleged because we got to go to NYC- sadly on our own dollar- but we had our own personal tour guide. Our professor. We were there for 4 days walked all over NYC and by the end my feet were torn up but my head was full of knowledge.

The project was this: Arkham house publishing Company bought a building in lower downtown manhattan and wanted to refurbish it to house a members only library and gallery. The library and gallery would hold rare gothic romance novels and art work such as Dali and Goya. The gallery itself was the only semi public place in the whole building and the rest was members only. This project really focusecd on the experiential aspect of architecture and creating spaces using proportions.

For midterms which occured about week 7 ( we only have 10 weeks in the quarter) we had to build 1/4" scale models out of cardboard so that we could peak our head into our building and experience the space. My model was as tall as I was in the end. (pictures above)

For the finals we had to refine our vision and make a 1./2 inch scale model out of wood or matte board- wood was insanely expensive so I picked the matte board. My modeling skills need work but in the end my project was a success... my boards were great... and on the final review day I had the best project in class- that isn't coming from me....its from the jury- ( In architecture review a jury is composed of 3 to how ever many people who are experienced- professors or real architects and they give you feed back, thecy check ur codes and ensure that you are on the right path

Concept was: use the exterior walls of the building( which were angled) repeat and reflect them to create a grid. The grid was reflected in plan and in section. Grid on interior walls was made of titanium and combined with aluminum created shelving units for work to be placed. On the most public floors the meshing on the walls was thick and as the meshing continued up on the inside the meshing got thinner to reflect the private spaces. Two additional floors were adde onto the building they were encased in frosted and regular glass to create a grand affect in the library stacks and reading room floors. This glass protrudes from the front facade making it a building with in a building that is bursting at the seems.
